What does employee engagement really mean

Today’s buzz word in recruitment is engagement. Why? According to a recent Gallup poll, 51% of employees in the United States are not engaged at work and have not been for some time.

As alarming as that statistic may be, many companies are addressing the problem without first knowing what it is. While many employers continue to focus on improving the tangible rewards associated with hard work, that may only address a small part of the problem. An article published in the Harvard Business Review outlines the core human needs that most employers are ignoring and why they have such an impact on performance.

While acknowledging the right problem to solve is a significant part of the battle ahead, your communication of the solution will ultimately determine your long-term success. The more you can make employees and candidates aware of your value propositions, beyond the pre-established tangibles, the more likely your employees will be to remain engaged.
